First, Then boards are an excellent tool to keep your students on task and motivate them to complete their work! First, Then boards create a visual aid for teachers to establish clear expectations while allowing students to remain motivated by seeing what preferred activity will follow the assigned task. This tool helps in so many ways such as

promoting positive behaviors within the classroom, minimizing disruption, enhancing learning, fostering independence, and providing individualized support!

When using First, Then boards, it is important to know what preferred activity the student will enjoy upon completing the assigned task. For example, a student may enjoy bubbles. In the “First” box, you may put an academic task such as “Math”. In the “Then” box, you may put bubbles. The student will visually be able to see “First math, then bubbles”. Watch how well your students are able to stay motivated and on task!
