Student Teacher Game – Fruit Theme

The student teacher game is a great behavior strategy that can be used with a small group or the whole class across a variety of lessons. If you teach using Direct Instruction, this is a recommended strategy to use while teaching groups! 

The idea is to focus on positive, expected behaviors. Prior to beginning the lesson, review expectations and how to get points. If the students earn the most points they get (a reward). Set up this reward with students prior to starting so they know what they are working to earn. Expected behaviors may include answering on signal, having eyes on the instructor or material, answering quickly when called on, and having materials like a pencil ready to use. 

Teachers get a point if students are not engaging in the expected behaviors. Students should be getting a LOT of points so you’re focusing on the positive. If you make this game fun, it will work and you will be surprised how few points you need to give to yourself (the teacher). If you find that you, the teacher are getting more points, you may need to reteach expectations and select a reward that is more valuable to your students. 

I’ve used this with Kindergarten students all the way up to high school students!
